Operating a lift truck is a lot more complicated than driving a vehicle. A lift truck driver should be highly skilled and trained in the operation of a forklift. Driving a lift truck requires a high level of concentration. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration or also known as OSHA reports that 85 people die in forklift-related accidents per year. Around 35,000 individuals are injured each and every year in mishaps related to lift trucks. Nearly half of operator deaths are caused by a forklift tip over.

In order to avoid tip overs, it is vital that operators know how to correctly assess load weight. In the construction business, the load weight is often posted right on the load. If a concrete block weighs 16 kilograms, and the load consists of cubes containing 90 concrete blocks, the whole weight of the load will be roughly 1,360 kilograms. If a load is wet, the driver should take more weight into account.

It is dangerous for drivers to make poorly informed estimations regarding the actual load weight and whether the forklift could handle it. If an operator cannot be certain about the load weight, he should request assistance from the supervisor.

Another cause of tip overs is failure to pull up close enough to a building to place or lift a load using an extended boom. It is important to use the load chart to prevent tipping the lift truck. Even if a forklift does not actually tip over, a mishap has occurred whenever the rear wheels come off the ground. This means the limitations of the forklift have been exceeded. Although damage might not be obvious, the back axle could have been broken when hitting the ground.

Forklifts may even tip when not carrying a load. An unloaded lift truck could tip if a driver has placed a load on scaffolding utilizing an extended boom. If the driver reverses the lift truck and abruptly turns while bringing the boom down, the forklift's center of gravity will be pushed to the edges and a tip over could take place. An operator must always use the joysticks to retract and lower the fork.
