Lift Truck Battery Safety
The big industrial sized batteries utilized to run electric lift trucks should be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety measures must always be followed while somebody connects the battery to the charger. It is important to inspect battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is important for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection comprises goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect clothes and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post should be situated near the charging place. The route to the station must not be obstructed and an injured worker should be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger must be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
When near a charging area and battery, open flames are not allowed. Do not permit things like matches or lighters to be utilized when an employee is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging are also has to be properly ventilated. The recharging method can cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
