Classifications of Scissor Lifts & Aerial Lift Platforms
A scissor lift consists of a series of crisscrossed steel arms which are linked to make an X pattern. When raised vertically, the X pattern of support holds the rectangular platform that is situated on top of the lifting apparatus. There are support railings along the edges of the lifting apparatus in order to help secure the workers' tools and keep them safe.
Scissor lifts provide a low profile which is ideal for pavement, hard dirt surfaces and concrete. These equipment use either an electric motor or a combustion engine to be able to power the lifting apparatus and move the lift. The operator would need to move the lift itself if he or she has to travel horizontally, as the lift apparatus just operates the lift in a vertical manner.
Rough Terrain Scissor Lift
The standard scissor lift and the rough terrain scissor lift use identical lifting technology. The main difference is that the rough terrain units feature a different base that is specifically designed for uneven surfaces. These models also offer oversized all terrain tires and higher ground clearance. The rough terrain scissor lifts use 4-wheel drive so as to navigate through muddy and difficult terrain with no trouble.
Telescopic Boom Lift
The telescopic boom lift uses a telescoping beam that elevates both vertically and diagonally. This particular unit has a small work platform which houses controls to be able to operate the boom. The controls function with a combustion engine so as to power the hydraulics that move the lift and power the boom. The telescopic boom lift is an independent lift unit and has off-road capable tires.
Articulating Boom Lift
The articulating boom lift features 2 telescopic booms which are attached with a moving elbow mechanism. This lifting equipment has a small work platform or a bucket which is equipped with hand controls in order to control the boom. These are stand-alone lifts that are powered by a combustion engine. Articulating boom lifts are available with either hard surface or off-road tires. These lifts are designed in order to reach on top of and over top of buildings.
Aerial Mast Lift
The aerial mast lift uses a telescopic mast so as to raise a work platform vertically into the air. Usually, these lifts are electrically powered or pneumatic powered and are self-propelled machinery. These equipment provide a great solution for working in high racks within narrow warehouse aisles. It is very essential to keep in mind that aerial mast lifts are limited to vertical movement and are not recommended for off-road use.
