Lift trucks or forklifts are powered industrial trucks which are usually utilized in the transportation and lifting of materials for various operations. These machines are usually utilized in the warehousing, dockside, mining and construction operations.

The forklift could be referred to lots of different names, depending on their uses. A few different examples of these names are: stacker trucks, lift trucks, trailer loaders and fork trucks. These equipment are used all around the world, mostly in the manufacturing and warehousing industry.

The first forklifts made their debut in the mid 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, when they were utilized as part of the construction of the 1906 Pennsylvania railroad. At that time, platform trucks were launched in order to help in moving goods. These very first platform trucks were battery powered. The trucks regained their popularity in WWI when extreme labor shortages happened because of all the enlisted men. This is when forklifts really arrived on the market to stay.

For forklifts, there are essentially 2 types: ones that handle light cargo and the ones that deal with heavier cargo. Lighter units will consist of: side loaders, towing tractors, hand pallet trucks and walkie starters. These machinery are built for handling lighter cargo and they are not ideal for very heavy loads. The specific load capacity of the machine is posted in the owner's manual and on the equipment itself. A few examples of the big truck types include: walkie order picking trucks, truck mounted forklifts and telescopic handlers.

There are a range of different units of forklifts available and lots of different variations of load and capacity. The majority of the time in warehouse applications, the lighter models is utilized. Bigger units are usually seen within the shipping business. Certain models have a tilting mast to make the load capable of bending in order to counteract any slipping.

Most forklift units with have rear steering wheels as this specific design aspect helps to increase the maneuverability of the equipment. Moreover, this steering manner comes in very useful when operating around corners. These kinds of machinery could be unstable because of their varying centers of gravity. It is a wise idea to avoid negotiating sharp corners.

Yet another kind consists of specialized forklifts. These equipment would consist of articulated counterbalance trucks and explosion proof trucks. The explosion proof trucks are used in factories and settings which handle flammable supplies.
